File-sharing network iMesh signs distribution deal with Sony BMG |
|
|
Sony BMG Music Entertainment has agreed to license its digital music content to iMesh for distribution through iMesh’s peer-to-peer file-sharing network, the companies said.
Sony and iMesh executives called the deal a significant turning point in the legitimate use of p2p networks to distribute copyrighted digital content. "We are pleased to make our music available to the new iMesh as they build a service that will offer consumers a compelling experience and will respect our copyrights," said Thomas Hesse, president of Sony BMG’s Global Digital Business Group.

Dutch court: ISPs don't have to reveal identity of users accused of file sharing |
|
|
A Dutch court has ruled that ISPs don't have to reveal the identities of 42 customers anti-piracy organisation BREIN accuses of file sharing.
The Court ruled BREIN's collection of IP addresses wasn't in line with Dutch data protection law, among other things, because it used an American company, Media Sentry, to collect data.
The premise in this case is that IP addresses are personal data under the Dutch Personal Data Protection Act (WBP), as was confirmed by the main Dutch Data Protection Authority (CBP).
Last year the CBP decided that the collection and storage of IP addresses would only be legitimate if BREIN handled it themselves.

iMesh confirms Sony deal |
|
|
Music giant Sony BMG has reached a licensing agreement with file-swapping service iMesh, one of the first such tie-ups since a U.S. Supreme Court decision clamping down on online copyright infringement.
The deal, confirmed on Friday by an iMesh representative, followed a high court ruling that unauthorized networks such as Grokster could be held liable for the copyright infringement of their users. Analysts said that decision added momentum to the move toward networks sanctioned by media companies.
Once one of the most popular of post-Napster song-swapping networks, iMesh, formed in 1999, was sued by the record labels in 2003 for copyright infringement and settled for $4.1 million.
The New York-based service said just after the June 27 Supreme Court ruling in favor of entertainment companies and against rival file-swapping network Grokster that it would roll out a music industry-"sanctioned" song-swapping service.

EU Rejects Law on Software Patents |
|
|
2005-07-07
Source: International Herald Tribune
The European Parliament in Strasbourg voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to reject a law that would have given software common patent protection across all countries in the European Union.
The decision, by 648 votes to 14, was preceded by a fierce four- year battle between those who supported the idea that companies should be able to own software and the inventions that use it and those who backed the idea that software breakthroughs should be shared widely and freely. That ideological battle will continue, though it will have to be fought separately in each of the 25 member states of the EU.

Google to buy Mozilla?
Source
Everyone has been speculating, but will Google finally make the move to purchase Mozilla's FireFox?
Some say Google is secretly developing its own browser, but why would it? Google is a constant "plug" for FireFox and everything it offers.
Since the pre-1.0 stages of FireFox, Google's Gmail - have supported (and in some cases, required) the use of Firefox. Since March 30, 2005 the Google search engine has utilized the link prefetching feature of Firefox for faster searching.
