Durian - New Blender Project |
|
|
As usual - like previously for Orange, Peach, Apricot - the Blender Foundation’s interest is to organize projects that will help Blender further:
* Stimulate development of advanced features.
* Validation of Blender by great artists
* Use and improve an open source creation pipeline
* Deliver good publicity and PR for Blender
* Create useful presentation and educational material in Open Content
* Last but not least, provide a fun and inspiring experience for the entire Blender community!
We do this by inviting the best of the talents from the Blender community to work in Amsterdam for half a year or more, in the studio of the Blender Institute. They get excellent working conditions, and full coverage for travel and housing, including a reasonable fee. All of tools we use here for the film are open source, and everything we create, including the final result, is being delivered as free and open content under Creative Commons Attribution.

Attack of the Kangaroo |
|
|
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- "An ambulance official says a
jogger has been taken to hospital after he was attacked by a kangaroo
on the outskirts of Australia's second-largest city. A jogger who hopped between a male and female kangaroo in Melbourne suffered a head injury and scratches. Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokeswoman Christine Paterson says the
man, in his 50s, was attacked Monday as he apparently ran between a
male and female kangaroo near his home at an outer suburb of Melbourne. She says the victim ran to a nearby house and telephoned for help while the kangaroo hopped away. Paterson says he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in a stable
condition with a gash on his head and minor claw scratches to his
chest, arms and hands. A Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment on the man's condition."

Interesting Bottle by Alan Bennett |
|
|
This is one of a series of glass Klein bottles made by Alan Bennett in
Bedford, United Kingdom for the Science Museum, London. It consists of
three Klein bottles, one inside another. A Klein bottle is a surface
which has no edges, no outside or inside and cannot properly be
constructed in three dimensions. In the series Alan Bennett made Klein
bottles analogous to Mobius strips with odd numbers of twists greater
than one.

Nigerian man to divorce 82 wives |
|
|
A Nigerian religious leader with 86 wives has
accepted an Islamic decree ordering him to divorce all but four of
them, local authorities say.
A spokesman for the emir of Bida told the BBC that Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, 84, agreed on Saturday to comply with the decree.
Last week one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, the Jamatu Nasril Islam, sentenced him to death.
The sentence was lifted but he was threatened with eviction from his home.
Earlier, Mr Abubakar had challenged Islamic
scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having
more than four wives. Read More

Some (disturbing) facts about Eugenics |
|
|
Eugenics is the
pseudoscientific belief of improving the human race through selective
breeding. Though forms of it still exist today (proponents focus on
prenatal genetic screening, in vitro fertilization, and genetic
engineering), its association with Nazism and the use of eugenics to
rationalize the Holocaust have caused it to become thoroughly
discredited. Read more at Neatorama

Kim Jong Il Is Dead or is he? |
|
|
Is Kim Jong Il dead? Yes, North Korea’s “Dear Leader” is no more,
having passed away in the fall of 2003, writes Waseda University
professor Toshimitsu Shigemura in Shukan Gendai (Aug 23-30). A one-time Mainichi Shimbun journalist posted in Seoul, Shigemura is introduced by the magazine as a leading authority on the Korean Peninsula. His latest book, released this month, is titled “The True Character of Kim Jong Il.” If true, the implications are potentially vast. Among them: former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s summit partner during one or both of his landmark visits to Pyongyang in 2002 and 2004 was not Kim himself but a dummy—the stand-in Shigemura claims has been fooling the world for at least five years. A dictator having one or multiple doubles is a familiar notion since Iraq’s Saddam Hussein was shown to have deployed them. But Saddam was alive at the time. Kim, in Shigemura’s scenario, was not manipulating a look-alike; he was replaced by one. Of course it’s fantastic—but in North Korea, says Shigemura, fantasy and reality are not mutually exclusive. “Japanese common sense cannot take the measure of North Korea’s uniqueness,” he writes. “For example: Kim came to Tokyo six times in the 1980s.” Then as now, North Korea and Japan had no diplomatic ties. Kim, then heir to the throne under his father, “Great Leader” Kim Il Sung, apparently traveled incognito by ship. His purpose: to take in the magic shows staged by magician Hikita Tenko at the upscale Cordon Bleu show pub in Akasaka. Shigemura cites as sources (without naming them) several people close to Kim’s family. He hears from them that Kim’s diabetes took a turn for
the worse early in 2000. From then until his supposed death three and a half years later he was confined to a wheelchair. Read More
