I stared at the sun this morning
trying to blind myself while driving
trying to clear memories from my mind.

As fate would have it the clouds moved in
blocking the sun from my waiting eyes
turning its pallor to white and grey.

Keeping me from what I need to cleanse me
like reaching for the unreachable,
grasping the ungraspable,
or loving the unlovable.

There were seconds when the sun shown through
to burn my mind with a searing headache,
but no relief from my past was to be had.

Why do I wish to forget all my failings
when truly they are all I can own?
They are part of who I am, part of me.

The sun protects me with its warmth
and burns away all the pain and regret
from deep inside this scarred and tattered soul.

Maybe that is why I run from the cold,
staying as close to the sun as possible
for my soul to fly like Icarus in the heavens.
