PostPosted: Mon Dec 05, 2005 4:35 am    Post subject: Help installing an old game to Windows XP

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I need some help with installing old games onto Windows XP.
Most are aware that games from Win95 and 98 were played in DOS mode and it's apparent that XP doesn't really support DOS.
The funny part is that on my computer which runs Windows XP Home, I can install and play these games but Mick's computer has a message that comes up (as seen below) Now we believe that Mick's computer is running in 32bit mode where as mine may be running in 16bit mode (haven't checked) either way, all we want to do is install say Warcraft 2 and play each other on the 2 computers. So how is this done? I have read a few articles in Google and 1 was suggesting that Microsoft had an update called act.exe yet I can't find it or anything about it.
Any suggestions please?

Windows XP is 32bit

But...go to the folder where Warcraft is installed, make a right click on the exe file, click on properties/ preferences and play around with the compatibility mode; there you can try to emulate win95, 98, 2000 etc. It should work for warcraft 2, cause I've done that too once.

Thanks Daimos but I tried these suggestions before. A sales person at a PC games store suggested installing Xp service pack 2 which I have on my PC so I will try that. I can't think of anything else Confused

C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Microsoft say this on the subject

Quote::
CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged:
• Config.nt
• Autoexec.nt
• Command.com

This is a common XP problem (or was when I wrote this, was in the iMesh 4 FAQ and hardly anyone has this error now with programs it seems).

You need to browse to the folder
C:\windows\system32
Look for the files listed above - one of them is most likely going to be missing. You could also try to search the folder for the file by clicking the "search button" and following the prompts.

Remember the missing file and then browse to
C:\windows\repair
look for the file you are missing, when you have it, right click the file, select copy from the list.

Go back to the folder C:\windows\system32 and paste the file into the folder

If the file you are after is NOT in the repair folder then you will have to follow the instructions on
support.microsoft.com/...-us;324767
which requires an XP CD or if your lucky, the file will be set as hidden (tools--->folder options--->view--->Show hidden files and folders--->apply)
