Chock was merrily working on his Series 2A Land
Rover one day in sunny Hazel Grove, when some
faulty wiring shorted out and opened up a hole in
the space-time continuium. Naturally this came as
a surprise to the Chockster but, thinking fast, he
grabbed his trusty AK-47, his emergency
harmonica and Dave, his German Shepherd dog -
plus one or two other essentials, such as
condoms, a few books etc.
He quickly stuffed them all into a bag, all except
Dave that is - that would be cruel.
Not a moment too soon either, for seconds later
he and Dave were sucked into the void and found
themselves floating in the vacuum of space in Eve
world.
'Oh F*ck!' Chock shouted, but naturally no-one
heard him, since he was actually in a vacuum at
the time.
Good job Dave, the dog, was along for the ride. He
was able to emit a high pitched howl which a
Caldari craft miraculously detected. And seconds
later, it rescued Chock and of course, Dave the dog
too.
How lucky is that eh?
But Chock's luck didn't stop there. The Caldari
craft which picked him and Dave up, was
experiencing technical difficulties with its' shields,
having just come from an altercation with a
particularly aggressive Minmatar school bus. Upon
explaining this to Chock, the captain of the Caldari
craft then wanted to know what Chock and Dave
were going to do about reimbursing him and his
crew, considering the chance they'd taken in
diverting to rescue he and Dave while in such a
dangerously vulnerable ship...
Well, it seems there's no such thing as a free
lunch, even in the future:
'Tell you what' said Chock, 'how about I take a
look at your shields and see if I can fix 'em? I'm
not bad with engines and stuff like that...'
'Sounds good' replied the Caldari captain.
Now, as luck would have it, there is a remarkable
similarity between the technology of Caldari
shields and late model six-cylinder Rover Engines
of the type fitted in some Series 2 Land Rovers.
And so Chock was indeed able to fix the Caldari
shields.
Chock then built his fortune by reproducing bits
from his dog-eared copy of the Land Rover Haynes
manual - the copyright not being enforceable in
the Caldari Empire - in his book: How to fix your
Caldari shields the Chock way. Which is still in
print as part of the Chocks-a-way series of books,
published by Weyland-Yutani and available at all
good space stations.
